About Sri Lankan Tourism

Sri Lanka, known as the Pearl of the Indian Ocean, has been an island that has attracted foreigners since ancient times. There is evidence that foreigners have come to Sri Lanka from countries such as Greece, the Middle East, Portugal, Holland, and England since ancient times. Not only is our little island blessed with natural beauty, but its economic, cultural, and political value has also led to the arrival of foreigners.

The arrival of foreigners to Sri Lanka has become a modern business. However, when the definition of a tourist is defined, it is clear that not every foreigner who comes to Sri Lanka is a tourist. Foreigners who come to Sri Lanka to appreciate the natural beauty, relaxation, historical value, and other factors such as climatic conditions, spiritual well-being, and simple life can be called tourists.

Not only Sri Lanka, but many developing countries in modern times earn a large amount of foreign exchange from tourism. Therefore, tourism is a key factor in the future sustainability and economic growth of our country.

Growth of Tourism Industry

Tourism in Sri Lanka began to grow and develop as an industry in the 1960s. Over the decades that followed, it has fluctuated and grown, and has had a significant impact on our economy to a greater or lesser extent. In 1963, an income of about 6 million rupees was earned, and in 1969 it had grown to 17 million rupees. The openness of the Sri Lankan economy after 1977 greatly helped the development of the tourism industry. The open economy helped foreign investors. New economic policies such as the open economy, allowing foreign investors, and restricting exchange rates had a great impact on the tourism industry. In 1980, 321,780 tourists visited Sri Lanka, and foreign exchange earnings that year were Rs. 1830 million. The majority of tourists who have visited Sri Lanka over the past decade or so have been from Western European countries.

Good Results in the Tourism Industry

The benefit of the tourism industry is that with the growth of tourism, many related industries have developed. It can be said that tourism has contributed to some extent to reducing poverty, both directly and indirectly.

Negative Results in the Tourism Industry

Although tourism appears on the surface to be an industry that increasingly earns foreign exchange, we should not forget the damage it has unwittingly caused to our people's livelihood.Tourism has, to some extent, contributed to the modernization of our culture, which has been multifaceted and exposed to the world for thousands of years.
